The No. 1 social media sin for companies

by jeremy.g.long / Business 101 / Social Media

I see it on almost a daily basis and it drives me crazy.

I type in a lovely, short domain (good!) –> www.YourCompanyHere.com <– I see a beautiful website that’s functional and practical.

Look! The company page has fun, engaging pictures of the team out and about, having fun and boasting a portfolio with incredible work. I like these folks. I want to get to know them more… so I click on the ‘Blog’ tab, featured so prominently in the primary menu.

Hmm… last entry… Dec. 12, 2017??

Damn, they must have had to let their social media person go. When was the last post before that? October 12, 2017?? Oh… that’s unsettling.

Let me check their Facebook– nooooooo! No posts since March 2018! Instagram??? Last updated June 2018???

DAMN.

It may seem a bit overdramatic, but my number one “do not do” for companies in the social media world is this:

If you have social media channels that are public — USE THEM.

It doesn’t have to be a daily blog, but if you feature a blog space on your website, you better damn well be using it at least once a week. Facebook? Once a day with relevant content. Instagram? C’mon man…. twice a day with fun, engaging content never hurt anyone.

If you’re not utilizing your communities, you might as well not have them. Take it off your site. It looks like you don’t care or want to have a conversation with your customers and potential customers. It’s pretty foolish. And how’s that one line go…?

Better for people to think you’re a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
