Bananarama Sock Junction: What to say when you don’t know what to say

by jeremy.g.long / Confidence / Creativity / Life / The Struggle

I don’t have anything to say.

There’s no words of wisdom or clever analogy. I feel mentally… stuck.

My thoughts today are random and jumbled. The few interactions I’ve had today are hard to remember and harder to explain because I haven’t been at my best mentally. Words have been hard to come by. It’s almost like playing Scrabble in a fog.

But I need to write. I need to produce content. More importantly, I need to “unclog” my brain.

This happens to me from time to time. I imagine others go through it as well.

What have I learned over the course of my 36 years to help me get over this hump? What’s the secret to getting beyond this state of… blah?

My secret: just type.

Type anything. Type the first thoughts that come to your mind.

Bananarama sock junction.

Doesn’t make any sense. Doesn’t need to. Because this post isn’t the one that’s going to blow me up. This is the one that’s going to allow me to move forward. And, as an entrepreneur, my biggest fear is not moving forward.

People will read this and be confused. They may never revisit my site again. That’s too bad, but I’ve got to get this out.

Some will say, well, you should have written it on a Word doc and then deleted it. Why show the world this imperfection?

Because any other way wouldn’t be real. It wouldn’t be honest.

Sometimes I get stuck. The ideas feel like they’re just beneath the surface and I can’t quite get to them. I need to remove some of the obstacles so I can get back to creating the content my clients know and love. I’ve created content for online consumption since I was 18 years old and what comes natural to me, doesn’t happen every day like flipping a switch.

It’s jarring to my senses. It makes me aggravated.

We all have different outlets for this kind of “blah-ness.”

You might work out. Some of you may need to drink a cafe mocha espresso Starbucks $9 coffee. Younger folks might zone out on a game on their phones. Older folks might pop in a VHS copy of “McLintock!” and day dream about getting punched in the face by John Wayne.

But the important thing is that you do something to get going again.

Your best work lies on the other side of this “Blah.”
